Vertigo and Dizziness
Physical therapy can address the most common cause of dizziness– Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. BPPV caused by otoliths, or stones, in the ear shifting in the ear canal and is brought on by head movement.
While the vertigo is certainly unpleasant, it causes for concern due to the increased risk of falls associated with the condition, especially in older individuals. Because of the prevalence of osteoporosis, degeneration of sensory organs and slower motor response, fractures are highly associated with these falls.
Physical therapy can treat BPPV by repositioning the otolithic debris back into place in the ear canal with a series of exercises.
